Episode 30 - Toxic Tropes in Rom Coms

The romantic comedy is a very old genre, starting with the likes of Harold Lloyd, popularized through screwball comedies in the 30s and 40s, and brought into modern times by directors like Judd Apatow. Through all those iterations various tropes have emerged, some of which, when looked at through a 2021 lens, are incredibly toxic and problematic. This week we go through some of those tropes, from stalking to lying, beauty standards, and homophobia.

With in-depth discussion on The 40 Year Old Virgin, When Harry Met Sally, Annie Hall, Love Potion Number 9, and 50 First Dates, and reference to He's Just Not That Into You, She's All That, Love Simon, 500 Days of Summer, and SO many more.
