The romantic comedy is a very old genre, starting with the likes of Harold Lloyd, popularized through screwball comedies in the 30s and 40s, and brought into modern times by directors like Judd Apatow. Through all those iterations various tropes have emerged, some of which, when looked at through a 2021 lens, are incredibly toxic and problematic.
